What memory do you
have of an incident when you experienced bias, prejudice, and/or oppression, or
witnessed someone else as the target of bias, prejudice, and/or oppression?
Keep in mind that one can encounter such incidents in real contexts, including
online environments, as well as in fictional ones, such as movies, books,
television shows, and the like.
Many years ago when I
was with some friend traveling through the south. We were going to attend a gay
pride festival. When we arrived at the hotel we were denied the ability to check
in. We were not able to get a cab we arrived 10 miles away when we were able to finally get a room. But the area
was not safe. The men who were renting the room sad gay people were not
welcomed. It was a very scary feeling and
something which I will never forget.
In what way(s) did the specific bias,
prejudice and/or oppression in that incident diminish equity?
It made you feel like
I was individual with little worth and that being was something that was not
worth while not important. I wanted to speak up but I did not know what to
truly say at the time.
What feelings did this
incident bring up for you?
I felt the incident
made me regret being a gay man- I did not want to be seen as a minority some
one who is less than I wanted to be seen as something that would not be denied
the ablity to have safe place to stay.
What and/or who would have to change in order
to turn this incident into an opportunity for greater equity?
I think if we were given
the opportunity to be said siarry to -
if the town could have change the town saying some may feel that way but
not all establishments.
You should never regret who you are. On behalf of the south I would like to apologize for the way you were treated. I know my words cannot replace the discriminatory actions of those who mistreated you; but I am deeply saddened that you and your friends were treated that way. Some people act based on their lack of knowledge and must be further educated on the realty of the real world as supposed to the world that they have created in their heads.
